Easily mistaken for black widow spiders given their similar shape, female false black widow spiders are larger than males. Females grow up to a body length of 15 mm. Predominantly eating crawling insects such as pillbugs and sowbugs, this species constructs large irregular-shaped webs but they possess very poor eyesight. Males live for around 18 months while females have been known to live for much longer up to six years.
