Did You Know?
Compared to other species, orb-weavers like the black and yellow garden spider have an additional claw on each foot to help them spin enormous webs.
Black and Yellow Garden Spider Biology
Firstly, black and yellow garden spiders breed twice a year. Females lay their eggs at night producing one to four egg sacs that contain more than 1,000 eggs. When cooler weather arrives, female black and yellow garden spiders die with spiderlings exiting the egg sacs in springtime.
Garden Spider Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle
Firstly, females are much larger than males growing to a body length of 28 mm compared to 5 mm. An orb-weaver spider, the black and yellow garden spider is known for constructing huge webs. These webs contain a distinctive zigzagged section called the stabilimentum. Constructing clean, orderly webs, they are built in areas near sunny fields where they can stay hidden and protected from the wind.
Found in British Columbia, black and yellow garden spiders commonly inhabit gardens and lawns. Their webs are often discovered close to gaps in a home’s foundation as well as on doorframes and windowsills too. Living for around one year on average, black and yellow garden spiders aren’t aggressive but they are venomous. However, their venom is harmless to humans. This species uses its venom to help feed on prey that are predominantly flying insects like flies and bees. Like other orb-weaver species, the black and yellow garden spider often eats its web full of insects at night before re-spinning a new web during the daytime.
