Did You Know?

In North America, cross spiders are typically discovered in British Columbia and the neighbouring northwestern United States.

Cross Spider Biology

Firstly, you can discover cross spiders from late summer until the autumn. The female cross spider will lay around 300 to 900 eggs with spiderlings lying dormant throughout winter. This species will deposit their eggs under the bark of dead trees. Once they hatch in spring, the female dies soon after the eggs are laid.

Cellar Spider Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

With adult females growing up to 20 mm long, the cross spider is an orb-weaver spider. This means they’re known for constructing enormous circular webs up to 40 cm across. This is in order to catch prey like flies and mosquitoes that are their primary food source. Hanging our face down on the web, they wait for their prey to fly into the web. In the evening, cross spiders are known to eat their web that is full of insects, spinning new webs in the daytime.

This species often inhabits gardens, hedgerows, meadows, and woodlands. Typically discovered in British Columbia, they’re often found in rural locations including buildings with exterior lighting and those with stairwells. Living for around one year on average, cross spiders can bite but are harmless to humans.

Wondering How To Get Rid Of Cross Spiders?

Are you questioning how to get rid of cross spiders? Firstly, you should know that cross spiders spin their webs in locations with little or no wind. Home and business owners can clear walkways, gates and windows by removing webs with a vacuum or broom. Sealing cracks around windows or doors can plug potential entry points too.
