Starling Identification

Size: 19 to 23 cm long, wingspan of 31 to 44 cm.

Colour: Black/purplish, glossy feathers with a metallic / iridescent sheen in the summer and brown with white speckling in the winter.

Description: In winter, they appear speckled. They are chunky with short tails and long, thin beaks. They are twice the size of a house sparrow, but smaller than a robin.

Order/Family: Passeriformes/Sturnidae.

Scientific Name: Sturnus vulgaris Linnaeus.

Did You Know?

When a starling is flying, their wings are short and pointed. This makes them look like a four-pointed star, which is how they earned their name.

Starling Biology

Starling eggs vary in colour from white to light blue. Starlings lay two to eight eggs, and they require the same 12 to 14-day window to incubate. They have approximately two broods per year. Starlings leave the nest approximately three weeks after they hatch.

Starling Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

Starlings form communal roosts that may end up being home to 10,000 more birds, including others such as blackbirds or grackles. During their migration, the flock populations can grow into hundreds of thousands in Southern Ontario and some other provinces. They are loud and spirited, often making lots of small noises such as whistles, whirrs, or rattles.

They nest in tall trees or buildings, sometimes nesting in residential venting systems. Their diet consists of wild or cultivated fruits like berries or cherries, insects, grains and seeds. In cities, it’s not unusual to see them eating at a bird feeder. Their droppings contain a variety of disease-causing bacteria and fungi.

Wondering How To Get Rid Of Starlings?

Do you have a residential or commercial starling problem? The most important step in pest control for birds is to have the area inspected to determine the species, population size, location of the problem and the equipment required by a professional pest control company. Since there are a variety of methods that can be used to eliminate these birds, such as trapping, netting and spike systems, it is important to contact a pest control company to determine the correct treatment for your situation.

Since these birds have a proclivity to nest in residential spaces including kitchens, bathrooms, dryers and oven vents, it is necessary to consult a credible pest control company to quickly eliminate birds from these areas and thus solve your starling problem.
