Here at Terminix Canada, we’re often asked questions like “what do squirrels eat?” and “where do squirrels live?”. Another frequent question is how to get rid of squirrels in your backyard. Ultimately, squirrels can inhabit virtually anywhere besides high polar regions and the driest of deserts. Herbivores for the most part, squirrels live off a diet of seeds and nuts. However, they will also dip into insects and even small vertebrates to survive. This particular rodent cannot digest cellulose. Therefore, they rely on foods rich in protein, carbs, and fats.

As their large eyes suggest, squirrels have excellent vision too. This allows them to find the best tree-dwelling spots or alternatively, the best hiding spots in your attic. A squirrel’s claws are sturdy and versatile. In short, this helps them grab and climb with ease, developing an acute sense of touch as a result. When they’re not running or climbing, squirrels often stand on their back legs. Elsewhere, early springtime is a tough period for squirrels. This is because nuts begin to sprout meaning they’re no good to eat. Typically, new food sources are unavailable until late summer. Lastly, some squirrels hibernate through the winter and other breeds are active year-round.
