Did You Know?

Pigeons are very smart animals. They are one of the only species that can pass the ‘mirror test’, which is a test of self-recognition.

House Sparrow Biology

There are many types of pigeons with approximately 11 species in North America.

Pigeons’ white eggs are laid one to two at a time and require approximately 18 days to incubate. Both parents incubate the eggs and approximately two to five broods are produced per year. Born featherless, the young are completely dependent on the parent birds for the first month for warmth and food. The young leave the nest approximately one month after they hatch.

Pigeon Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

Pigeons have become the most troublesome bird pest associated with buildings. They can nest in a variety of hard to reach locations, such as building ledges, signs, and air conditioners. Pigeons nest during all seasons, conditions permitting. They’ll feed on anything they can get their beaks on including garbage, vegetable matter, insects, and handouts.

Pigeons’ very acidic droppings can cause significant damage to equipment, painted surfaces, marble, and limestone. Droppings can also contain a variety of disease-causing bacteria and fungi. Many of the parasitic mites associated with pigeons also bite humans.

Pigeons mate for life and are highly sociable animals, often seen in groups of 20 to 30 birds. Pigeons live from four to 12 years.

Wondering How To Get Rid Of Pigeons?

If you’re struggling to handle a residential or commercial pigeon problem, a professional pest control company can help. Pigeon removal begins with an inspection to determine the species, population size and the equipment required to remove them. After that, the correct removal techniques can be utilized, whether that involves common methods such as trapping, netting, and spike systems. It is important to contact a pest control company to determine how to get rid of pigeons in your area.
