House Fly Biology

Adult house flies are up to 7.5 mm long and have a light grey body with four dark stripes running the length of their thorax. Possessing distinctive red eyes, house flies have four distinct life stages – egg, larva or maggot, pupa and adult. House flies lay their eggs on organic material like garbage and manure with house fly eggs hatching in only a few hours. The transformation from larva to adult typically takes place within two to 10 days.

House Fly Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

A house fly can live anywhere from two-and-a-half weeks in hot climates to three months in cooler areas. Importantly, you should know that house flies are notorious for spreading disease. It’s been discovered that each house fly is capable of carrying more than a million bacteria. Capable of spreading diarrhoea, typhoid fever and cholera, house flies can contaminate human food when they simply land on food preparation surfaces. Disgustingly, when house flies land on food, they regurgitate their stomach contents onto the food to liquefy it before ingesting it. Elsewhere, house flies have taste receptors on their lower legs and feet – much like butterflies.

Habitat-wise, house flies are usually found where humans reside. Developing their larvae in or around garbage, horse manure or other decaying matter, house flies are comfortable in a plethora of locations. A house fly infestation is often found near food storage areas, recycling bays, sewers, trashcans, and many more places.
