Pocket Gopher Biology
Firstly, most sub-species of pocket gopher breed once a year. Sometimes, this is twice a year but in fewer circumstances. Springtime is when male gophers seek out female mates when searching for burrows. Pocket gophers don’t always find one female mate but sometimes more. After birth, baby gophers are called pups with litters living in nests comprised within gophers’ extensive tunnel networks.
Pocket Gopher Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle
Burrowing rodents that earn their name from the distinctive pockets in their cheeks that are designed to carry food, pocket gophers are very destructive rodents. Known for their extensive tunnelling abilities and large protruding teeth that are usually brown or yellow, they are infamous for destroying farms and gardens. Living most of their life underground, pocket gophers live in a network of tunnels and burrows. Sometimes, these systems can extend up to 200 yards with up to 100 mounds. They use their sharp teeth and long claws to dig through soil with relative ease.
Living for less than three years on average, pocket gophers are herbivores and rely on a diet of plant life and its roots, bulbs and leaves to survive. Plants are also their water source meaning there’s no need to emerge from their tunnels when searching for it. For the most part, pocket gophers remain underground to keep themselves safe from predators that include owls and snakes.
