Fruit Fly Biology

Adult fruit flies are up to 4 mm long and are a dull, brown-yellow to brown-black in colour. This fly species has distinctive red eyes. Larvae are small (1/10 to 1/5 inches long), characterized by extended stalk-like breathing tubes at the rear end of their bodies.

Fruit Fly Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

Fruit flies can be seen year-round, usually in the kitchen. They are attracted to decaying or overripe fruits and vegetables like bananas, tomatoes, onions, and other fresh produce.

Fruit fly eggs are laid onto the surface of fermenting fruit or vegetables, or in areas where moisture and yeast are abundant. The eggs hatch within 30 hours. Each female produces up to 500 fruit fly eggs. The larvae complete their development in five to six days, and crawl to drier areas of the food or their habitat in order to pupate. Fruit flies complete their life cycle in about eight to ten days. Fruit flies are common structural pests, frequently associated with recycling bins and their contents. Elsewhere, fruit and salad bars are also ideal habitats.

Wondering How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies?

The best way to get rid of fruit flies is to contact Terminix Canada. Our residential and commercial fly control gets the results you need.

Firstly, fruit fly control involves finding and eliminating the breeding material. This is the source of your fruit fly infestation. Complete and thorough sanitation is necessary to eliminate the source of the fruit fly infestation. Insect light traps and baited jar traps, fitted with tops, which permit entry but prevent escape, are effective in reducing the population, but are no substitutes for sanitation when it comes to fruit fly control.
