Fire Ant Biology

Also known as red imported fire ants, these ants measure around 1.6 to 5 mm and are reddish brown in colour. Distinguished by their dark coloured stinger, most Canadian fire ants originate from Europe. For example, according to Barry Hicks, a scientist at College of the North Atlantic’s Carbonear campus, these ants have inhabited Newfoundland for at least 100 to 150 years and have previously been discovered in Carbonear, Corner Brook and St. John’s.

Fire Ant Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

A very aggressive ant, the alkaloid venom that this species injects is an irritant to human skin. This leads to red bumps and scarring. Favouring warm and sunny conditions, this ant is commonly found in dry fields away from shade and can be found around nursery plants and grassy areas in your yard. They eat things like dead insects, moths, fly larvae, and even other ants too.

This ant species is highly protective over their nests and will attack people and animals. Their sting feels like a wasp sting and can be painful. Living in colonies that can contain between 100,000 and 500,000 ants, colonies typically include female worker ants and one queen who lays the eggs.
