Carpenter Ant Biology

Carpenter ants are the largest of all ant species and range from 6 to 25 mm long, with slightly larger sized queens. You can identify this particular species by colour. These ants are typically black but can sometimes be red and black, solid red or brown.

Carpenter Ant Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle

Usually found nesting in wood, carpenter ants are social insects. This ant species doesn’t eat wood, but does excavate galleries for their nesting areas. Carpenter ants and carpenter ants with wings actively feed at night and during early morning hours, preferring to snack on sugary solutions like sweet honeydew. Elsewhere, carpenter ants feast on a wide variety of foods and eat other insects too.

Mature colonies of carpenter ants range in size from several thousand workers to upwards of 10,000 to 15,000. Additionally, black carpenter ants complete their life cycle in roughly 60 days. Carpenter ants’ main colonies rely on a constant source of moisture to survive with nests coming in two forms – parent nests and satellite nests. Queens reside in the parent nest while satellite nests host expanded colonies.

Wondering How To Get Rid Of Carpenter Ants?

Eliminate your residential or commercial carpenter ant infestation with Terminix Canada. When you do it yourself, it’s difficult to locate and provide carpenter ants treatment that is effective enough.

Since this ant species nests in wood, the key to carpenter ants control is making sure any decaying piles of wood are removed from your property. All food items should be stored in sealed containers and any food spills should be cleaned up immediately.

Elsewhere, home moisture levels should be evaluated too. This means fixing any potential leakage areas including defective plumbing, roofing and drainage systems. Clipping tree limbs and brush that touch or overhang your home or business can help wipe out the bridges that carpenter ants use to enter your property.
