American Cockroach Biology
The American cockroach is the largest house-infesting roach, measuring up to 43 mm in length. Not native to North America, it is believed that this cockroach’s roots actually trace back to Africa. With males and females growing to roughly the same size, you can distinguish males by their wings that stretch beyond the abdomen. A female American cockroach lays about 16 eggs at a time in an ootheca (egg case). She will produce about six to 14 oothecae during her lifespan, with an average incubation period of 44 days. That’s up to 224 offspring.
American Cockroach Behaviour, Diet, Habitat and Life Cycle
In the main, American cockroaches live outdoors but once they invade structures, American cockroaches typically harbour in basements, bathrooms and kitchens. Like all cockroaches, this species is constantly on the lookout for food, shelter and warmth. Long associated with infesting sewer systems across North America, this species ultimately needs a safe haven to reproduce their young. The optimum living conditions for American cockroaches are warm, damp and humid spaces, typically between 70-80°F. Elsewhere, American cockroaches can bite but this occurs infrequently.
Diet-wise, this particular cockroach is a scavenger and eats a variety of things, particularly decaying matter like leaves, fungi and even small insects too. For homeowners, be aware that American cockroaches also enjoy easy snacks like food spills and crumbs beneath kitchen appliances and on the floor. American cockroaches go through 10 to 13 instars before reaching maturity with this process taking an average of 600 days. Adult males can live up to 362 days, whereas adult females can live more than 700 days.
Wondering How To Get Rid Of American Cockroaches?
Eliminate your residential or commercial American cockroach infestation with Terminix Canada. Remember, an effective cockroach removal program depends on diligent sanitation to eliminate excess food, water, and harbourage areas.
The use of gel baits and dust are the most effective means of cockroach control. Glue traps are helpful, but are seen more as monitoring devices than a control tactic. A thorough vacuuming of harbourage areas is also beneficial in neutralizing cockroach populations by destroying cockroach eggs.
Ultimately, our team of professionals know which cockroach tactics to deploy so troublesome cockroach infestations can be tackled swiftly and effectively.
