Did You Know?
In October 2010, CBC reported that a fourth black widow spider had been discovered in the GTA. Frighteningly, Mississauga resident and winemaker Tony Nicoletti discovered the black widow spider dangling beside a broom in his garage.
Common Toronto Spiders
Black and Yellow Garden Spiders
Size: 5 to 28 mm long (body).
Colour: Yellow, black or golden.
Behaviour: Garden spiders often build webs in areas near sunny fields where they can stay hidden and protected from the wind. They keep clean, orderly webs and are not aggressive.
Cellar Spiders
Size: 2 to 8 mm long (body).
Colour: Grey, light brown or pale yellow.
Behaviour: They can be short-bodied or long-bodied and are often found in dark, damp places like basements or cellars. They are sometimes referred to as daddy longlegs, as they have very long, thin legs. Cellar spiders construct loose and irregular webs, and hang upside down in them as they wait for their prey.
Common House Spiders
Size: 5 to 8 mm long (female body), 3.8 to 4.7 mm long (male body).
Colour: Brown, orange, black or grey in colour.
Behaviour: Most common house spiders are harmless. They may bite if they feel threatened but it’s very unlikely. They are normally found in basements or dark corners in closets or under furniture
Cross Spiders
Size: 6 to 20 mm long (body).
Colour: Sandy brown to burnt orange with pale spots in a cross shape on its large abdomen.
Behaviour: Cross spiders are very common and weave orbs instead of webs. They hang out face down on the web, waiting for their prey to fly into the web. You are likely to find them in gardens, meadows, hedgerows or next to buildings with exterior lighting. You may also find them in stairwells.
False Black Widow Spiders
Size: 10 to 15 mm long (female body), 3 to 6 mm long (male body).
Colour: Dark brownish with white spots on the body.
Behaviour: These spiders are often mistaken as black widows and are found among human populations worldwide. They are less harmful than a black widow, however their bites are still extremely painful. Only the female bites. They are normally found on fences, the bark of trees or in walls.
Wolf Spiders
Size: Up to 35 mm long (body).
Colour: Brown, tan, black or grey with dark markings.
Behaviour: Wolf spiders get their name from the way they hunt. Unlike most spiders that build webs, wolf spiders violently hunt down their prey using their quick legs and strong eyesight. They live almost everywhere in the world and are very common in meadows, grasslands and wetlands - basically anywhere they can find food.
Zebra Jumping Spiders
Size: 5 to 19 mm long (female body), 5 to 6 mm (male body).
Colour: Black with white stripes.
Behaviour: These are very common spiders in North America. They don’t build webs. Instead they stalk their prey before pouncing on it. They eat insects or spiders smaller than them, usually feeding on mosquitoes too.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Are Toronto Spiders Active?
It all depends on the species. Black and yellow garden spiders are active in late summer and throughout autumn. Cellar spiders are found year-round. Common house spiders are most visible in late summer and early autumn.
How Dangerous Are Toronto Spiders?
Most spiders in Canada can bite you if they feel threatened or you catch them hiding in your shoes or gloves. Spiders can cause psychological distress for many people who suffer from arachnophobia. The sight of spiders can also affect your home or building aesthetically. Spiders are more of a nuisance than a hazard, but for many people the sight of spiders strikes fear in them, deeming them worthy of Toronto spider removal and eradication.
Are There Any Poisonous Spiders In Canada?
For the most part, Canadian spiders are harmless. However, there are two types of poisonous spiders in Canada, the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider. It’s also possible to find other poisonous spiders in Canada that aren’t native to our land but have snuck here in shipping crates from the United States or Mexico.
There is a misconception that our poisonous spiders are fatal, which they can be, but it’s very rare. For the most part, you’ll experience swelling, pain, cramping and in the case of a brown recluse, you’ll experience a small amount of necrotic tissue in the area you’ve been bit.
Unless you see the spider that bit you, it’s very hard to know what you were bitten by after the incident. Many spider bites look the same.
Why Are There So Many Spiders In My House?
Wondering how to get rid of spiders in your home? Many spiders prefer dark and moist environments, often making homes in caves, tree hollows, shrubs, soil, or under rocks. In homes, you’ll often find spiders making their webs in basements, garages, and other dark, quiet spaces. They get in your home through cracks and holes in your walls or open doors.
If you have one spider, it doesn’t mean you have a spider infestation. Spiders lead solitary lives and, in some cases, can live up to 15 years. They prey on other pests like flies, aphids, caterpillars and various insects. For a permanent removal solution, contact Terminix Canada for effective spider removal.
How Do You Stop Spiders Coming Into Your House?
Since spiders often enter homes through cracks or gaps, keeping your windows and doors closed and properly sealed will help stop them from entering. Seal or caulk any cracks or gaps in your foundation.
Keeping your home free of other insects will also help to discourage spiders from entering your home too. Spiders want to live where their food is, so no food source equals no spiders. Removing spider webs from your home can also help discourage spiders.
Dehumidifiers can help remove the extra humidity from the air in basements, making the space less appealing to spiders. For a more permanent solution, contact Terminix Canada for effective spider removal.

I began using Terminix Canada last June hoping they would be able to control a horrible exterior spider problem we experience every summer, common with living by the lake. I was amazed at how well it worked! Never, in 35 years, have our windows and property been so clear of webs and spider droppings throughout the summer. I use them regularly now. Their products work for a whole range of pests, and their technicians are knowledgeable, thorough and personable. I can’t recommend them highly enough!
