Common Flies In Canada
Blow / Bottle Flies
Size: 6 to 16 mm long.
Colour: Shiny, metallic blue, green or copper, depending on the species.
Behaviour: Blow flies and bottle flies are important scavengers in nature as they are one of the first insects to reach a dead animal. These flies are part of the decomposition process that recycles nutrients back into the soil. The maggots of these flies may be used by forensic entomologists to place the time of death in murder cases. They also breed in garbage containers, dumpsters and decaying vegetative matter like compost piles.
Cluster Flies
Size: 8 to 10 mm long.
Colour: Dark grey with golden hairs and overlapping wings.
Behaviour: Cluster flies are parasites of earthworms. In the late spring/early summer, cluster flies lay their eggs in soil cracks, and the maggots enter their earthworm hosts. The complete life cycle from egg to adult cluster fly is about 27 to 39 days. Starting in mid-August, adult cluster flies seek out protected locations—preferably sunny, light-coloured buildings. Cluster flies enter properties one at a time, but collect throughout spaces in swarms, much like a swarm of bees. They enter businesses through small openings such as cracks around your windows or walls and tend to hibernate until warmed by the building’s environment.
Drain Flies
Size: 1.5 to 5 mm long.
Colour: Adult drain flies have a dark grey body and lighter-coloured wings. Fine hairs on their bodies and wings give drain flies a fuzzy, moth-like appearance. Hence why they’re often called moth flies.
Behaviour: Drain flies are most active at night. They are weak flyers that make short hopping flights of a few feet when they are disturbed. Drain flies rest on surfaces with their wings held over their back like a roof. You’ll usually find a drain fly close to its breeding ground.
Fruit Flies
Size: 2.5 to 4 mm long.
Colour: Varying shades of yellow, brown-yellow or brown-black.
Behaviour: Fruit flies can be seen year round, usually in kitchens. There they can be found around areas where decaying or overripe fruits or vegetables are found. They are attracted by bananas, tomatoes, onions and other produce. They are also attracted to other foods that are left unrefrigerated and to food containers that have not been rinsed where there may be residue traces or strong residue aromas.
House Flies
Size: 4 to 7.5 mm long.
Colour: Light grey bodies and dark stripes running the length of the thorax.
Behaviour: A house fly can live anywhere from two-and-a-half weeks in hot climates to three months in cooler areas. House flies are notorious for spreading disease. It’s been shown that each fly is capable of carrying more than a million bacteria. House flies can spread diarrhoea, typhoid fever and cholera. House flies spread bacteria that contaminate your food and the surfaces where you prepare your food just by landing on them. After a house fly lands on your food, it regurgitates its stomach contents onto the food to liquefy it before ingesting your food.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Months Are Canadian Flies Active?
Aside from fruit flies that are active year-round, most flying insects’ activity is limited to a few months in the year. Canadian blow flies, bottle flies, cluster flies and house flies are summertime pests from May to August.
Are Flies Dangerous?
In short, all flies carry danger. Essentially, species like house flies, fruit flies and cluster flies carry and spread bacteria and disease. Picking up pathogens from places like trash bags, they can transfer them to wherever they land. Elsewhere and according to the exact species, some diseases spread by flying insects include cholera, dysentery and typhoid.
Why Do I Have Flies In My Business?
Food preparation and disposal, along with air currents, attracts flies into businesses. Flies detect the odours of food inside or from garbage containers outdoors. Some flies can breed in drains and garbage containers, and thus develop populations inside buildings. On cool days, a warm building attracts flies, while during hot days, cool air from a building may attract flies. Because flies primarily breed outdoors in manure, garbage and the carcasses of dead animals, they may carry bacteria into your space.
How Can I Prevent A Fly Infestation?
Different types of flies require different methods of fly pest control. Each fly type has its own habits and preferred living conditions. Fruit flies prefer ripened/rotting fruit or fresh garbage, while moth flies prefer drains. House flies primarily breed in fresh manure, while blow flies prefer dead animals or rotting garbage. Positive identification is often a key to discovering active breeding sites.
Efficient fly pest control and fly removal is of great importance to us because flies jeopardize your health and safety by carrying toxins and diseases. When you need a proven house fly or fruit fly killer, choose Terminix Canada.
